Last year alone it sold seven million units and so-called “speed cubing” competitions – where contestants attempt to solve the puzzle against the clock – are as popular as ever. It stills retains its appeal to this day. It took six years to go from prototype to market, but when it finally hit the shelves at the start of the 1980s, it became the fastest selling puzzle of all time. “I think, probably, that’s part of the key to the success of the cube – you are able to have a connection with this order and chaos Starting off with just chunks of wood and rubber bands, Rubik set about trying to create a structure that would permit individual blocks to move independently of one another without the whole thing falling apart. His life-changing idea arrived when he was in his late 20s, a young professor still living at home with his parents. The son of a poet mother and a father who manufactured glider planes, Rubik grew up in Soviet-era Hungary, studying both sculpture and architecture. And yet the man whose name it bears – Erno Rubik – only ever intended it to be a teaching aid for his small class of design students. The colorful puzzle, consisting of small blocks rotating on a central axis, has sold an estimated 350 million units since its conception nearly 40 years ago. But that hasn’t stopped the Rubik’s Cube from becoming the most popular toy in history. So after 6 years of waiting, Cube World will be launching on Steam sometime in fall of 2019 on Steam. There’s one solution out of 43 quintillion possible combinations, and even the man who invented it spent a month of solid research trying to figure it out. Hopefully this will allow players who had gone through and enjoyed the beta will be able to enjoy once more, now will a full game and the likes. Von Funck has confirmed that anyone who had purchased the game back in 2013 before the radio-silence, will be given a steam key. ![]() The game seems to be being pitched as a full release, and not a beta or early access. Adventures including quests given by villagers, fighting giant monsters, exploring ancient dungeons, taming pets, finding mounts and much, much more. The game is designed around exploration, as it’s procedurally generated for each playthrough to be different and have new adventures. In Cube World, players can take on the role of four different classes mage, ranger, warrior, and rogue. The Steam listing has also shown up, showing that while those specific months aren’t written in stone, the release time should be soon. The tweet confirms two things: that Cube World will officially be launched on Steam, and that launch window will be sometime within the October and November timeframe of this year. ![]() ![]() Hopefully around the end of September/October 2019. And earlier today, von Funck revealed what long time fans have been waiting for: a confirmation. But then, recently, von Funck began to post new videos, including a 16-minute long gameplay of one of the four playable classes. It seemed the Cube World was going to disappear off the face of the planet soon enough. And soon enough, the social media posts and communications on the direction of the game were down to one every other year, if that. Other than a few videos and developer updates, which seemed to be roughly once a month during its first couple years of launch, there hadn’t been much outside of where Cube World was headed.
